Things pretty much go according to plan, and this brings the battle to Almaraz and the French-occupied fortresses on each of the banks of the Tagus River. And the impossible is exactly what the formidable Major Sharpe is asked to do when he’s dispatched on an undercover mission behind enemy lines, deep in the Spanish countryside. Cornwall avoids this problem in Sharpe's Command by locating the story back in Sharpe's late 30s (1812). So when, the dust still settling after the Battle of Waterloo, the Duke of Wellington needs a favour, he turns to Sharpe.

And the Lieutenant, Love, had own personality at the start and then when he re-emerged at the end, he was like a completely different character. Wading waist-deep in shit to scrape mineral deposits off the walls, Still, they are French, so they possibly don't notice. The assignment is not easy because Sharpe and his riflemen do battle with the French; the latter not well-trained and their officer is not too good in strategizing. His father was a Canadian airman, and his mother, who was English, a member of the Women's Auxiliary Air Force. To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average.

Tom Garrard - a character that died in the previous book in the continuity - now finds himself no longer an officer, no longer in the same regiment, and somehow no longer with the same country's army. Haven't caught up with most of the original series so going to go back and revisit both the books and the show I think - this was such an enjoyable listen on borrowbox!Napoleon's army may be defeated, but another enemy lies waiting in the shadows – a secretive group of fanatical revolutionaries hell-bent on revenge. While I am sure Cornwell enjoys his job and I have no objection to him making money from it, Sharpe’s Command does feel like he needed some cash to renovate the indoor lap pool at Chatham.

The bloodthirsty biographies of the world’s most infamous pirates are reproduced in this Folio edition of Captain Charles Johnson’s renowned work, including original woodcut illustrations and a fascinating introduction by Margarette Lincoln. I have not read any of the prior works to the present edition, so I am only aware on how the characters performed their roles in this novel.

To mark Folio’s 75th anniversary, Michael Ende’s The Neverending Story is published as a magical new edition, beautifully illustrated by award-winning artist Marie-Alice Harel and bursting with exquisite design details.

No great bad guys or major twists but it is always nice to have more Sharpe, even if the author is slightly off his game with this one. The TV show always liked to put emphasis on Sharpe and his riflemen, but in the books, they were always a backdrop to the greater South Essex regiment, and the machinations of Wellington's army in Spain. Bernard Cornwell’s latest (2023) Sharpe adventure Sharpe’s Command places our hero at the battle of the Bridge at Almaraz, 1812 – as usual, based on historical events. The protagonist is an archer who participates in the Battle of Agincourt, another devastating defeat suffered by the French in the Hundred Years War.

But they're rapidly outnumbered, enemies are hiding in plain sight, and as the French edge ever closer to the frontline, time is running out . Notwithstanding those minor points, the Sharpe books tend to be centred around successful British actions, which make them successful actions for Sharpe. A little by the numbers in some places and the main antagonist was a little mid but the action is as high octane as ever and I really enjoyed the climax .
