Bonding over a shared love of literature and ideas, a deep connection is forged between the two, who embark on the adventure of a lifetime. Facing heartbreak and poverty, discovering friendship and faith, against all the odds, the couple struggle to secure a love that will endure forever. Nowadays, when I reflect on my interest in English, I can thank my aunt, an English teacher who clearly understood the importance of reading. They had so many deep conversations and were always so honest with each other that you can’t help but just love these characters. Books take us to places we’ve never been, they teach us about our world, and they help us to understand human experience.

Written in the first person from Joy’s POV, I often found myself wondering if she was being truthfully portrayed. The story is in first person which I used to say I wasn’t a fan, but I’m hooked now after reading this. It’s fascinating to explore their relationship which involves a respect and admiration for the other’s intellectual and creative endeavors, a shared love of nature and the mystical, a deep friendship, as well as romance. I would have liked less details of life before Lewis, less details about Joy’s poor marriage (which is a bit graphic and rather vulgar at times). I feel, in part, that Joy may have fallen victim to today's feminist culture that demands recognition; however, I do believe Lewis has fallen victim to idolization in our churches today.

This beautifully written book details the growing friendship of Joy David and CS Lewis that culminated with their marriage. Lewis, who would ultimately be the author of thirty books, a genius, bachelor eccentric in his fifties, and a don at Magdalen College, Oxford, replies, and a correspondence is established, at first quite formal, intellectual, mentor to student, and then more as friends and equals. She took a massive leap, leaving her husband and kids behind and coming to England, even if only for a few months initially. Although separated by an ocean, seventeen years difference in age, and individual traumas, love is powerful. Waiting to see what you think of the Clockmaker’s Daughter– have it on reserve at the library, but I think it will be a wait. It’s hard to decipher what happened and what is fabricated, but what a wonderful story in dedication to Joy it is.
