About this deal

I’m not sure if it was the British-ness of the characters or what, but MC Jesse Spark reminded me a great deal of both Charlie Spring ( Heartstopper: Volume One) and Noah Grimes ( Noah Can't Even), who are two other gay teen characters I’ve adored in recent years. Even the brief mentions of what it felt like in recovery were enough to make me cry with feeling like I had been seen. It makes you laugh, it makes you think, and it makes you cry, but most of all, it makes you feel like you're at home. The whole foreshadowing of what was going to happen was all very much in your face which kind of ruined the reading experience for me as I pretty much was reading waiting for my expectations to be met and they eventually were.

Pulling from his own personal experience, this story of a talented teen filmmaker who discovers he needs open heart surgery is an emotional ride as Jesse tries to get his Zombie movie filmed before he goes under the knife.

Oh, and William, I swallowed a few times when I suddenly read there was an Ellis Bell Memorial Drama Studio, and laughed out loud when I saw the titles for the tracks for the movie. This is my first-time reading a William Hussey story but I was won-over pretty damn quickly by his wonderful writing, layered storytelling, and delightful characters. The characters were great and lovely, the start of the book was very good and the writing was alright! Yes, it's a gay romcom but there is so much more to this book - family relationships, friendship drama, body image issues, and facing a major life changing event when you're only 17.

Das ganze Buch ist in der Ich-Perspektive geschrieben und gibt einen wundervollen Einblick in das Leben des Jungen, den wir begleiten. It was just so heart-warming and emotionally touching, and was exactly what I needed from a book right now. But since I've joked that open heart surgery has lowkey made me a zombie (ya know, the whole heart-stopping-and-then-restarting thing? Secrets are threatening to break the trio of friends up and the further into filming they get the tenser the situation gets.Jesses film proposal “zombie honeymoon” is the biggest project they’ve done so far, but things do not go smoothly.

Morgan was so relatable too, once again her love for performance but also how she views herself as not enough. Really, this book was so incredibly cute and funny and sweet and heartwarming and painful and „I have hearts in my eyes“! I found this a lovely, touching, and heartwarming read and will definitely be looking to read/listen to more books from this author. This is (once again) a phenomenal book, it’s cute, it’s fun, it’s clever, it’s adorable, it’s hilarious, it’s emotional (I sobbed like a baby), it’s just EVERYTHING OKAY? I loved it being framed from the plot device of a scar from life-saving surgery, something I have never really seen as the focus / driving emotional force of a novel.relatable depictions of self image/ confidence and body positivity , loving your body can be hard especially for teenagers and i just loved how this book presented that but also pushed the important message of ; scars are beautiful and so are we as people ! The main character, Jesse, is a gloriously nerdy, passionate, self-doubting teen, who just happens to be facing a very serious medical condition; something that is dealt with with sensitivity and good-humour without diminishing the range of fears and concerns that it brings up. To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. Fall in love before this surgery lands him with a huge scar – because how will anyone ever fancy him after that? I loved the novel's focus on body image / identity -- not just Jesse's own, as every single character had their own struggles with that topic.

Together with his childhood friends and new love interests he will try to juggle directing a movie, trying to find a boyfriend, the idea of heart surgery and the simple stress of being a teenager. It was so clever and so effective, especially knowing that it was directly from the author's own emotional experience. This was just so much fun, I was expecting this and it didn’t disappoint at all, it delivered everything I wanted and more. His latest books include the highly-anticipated KILLING JERICHO (April 2023), the first in a brand new series featuring crime fiction's first Traveller detective, and the acclaimed political thriller for teens, THE OUTRAGE. I love how nowadays a cover with two cute gay boys on it is seen as a major selling point rather than an obstacle. The problem is, he has a heart condition that will put him under a knife in 2 months, so time is of the essence. The whole book is written in first person perspective and gives a wonderful insight into the life of the boy we accompany.
