It’s only right that a fourth-generation model gets a fourth-generation driver. Grado’s ‘X Drivers’ debuted in the Prestige Series to which the 2021 What Hi-Fi? Award-winning SR325x and SR80x belong, and are implemented for the first time in 50mm size here. Grado says that they have been specifically tuned for the wooden enclosures they sit in and bring a "completely redesigned speaker and new harmony" to the headphones. The Grado drivers built into the hemp housings had to be specifically tuned for a material we’ve never worked with before. Being paired with maple gave us some foresight, but only through trial-and-error could we get the speakers to sound how we wanted, and bring out the potential of the hemp. What do you think of when someone describes something as timeless? Does it have to be around for a certain amount of time? Does it have to be made a certain way from the very beginning? There is intrinsic value to something being considered "timeless," and there is a certain pedigree that one expects from such a company. Grado is one such company that truly creates timeless headphones. Sure they make more than headphones, but it's the way they've been making them for so long that stands the test of time and makes them desired by audiophiles all over the world. With 7 different pads at my disposal, all with their own characteristics, it's time to listen away! I'll list 3 criteria: bass, treble, and full, on a scale of -5 to +5. 0 is ideal for my taste, so the closer to 0, the better, but note that 0 isn't necessarily perfect. Shifting from 0 leans toward too little or too much. Full is my subjective opinion on how thin or how veiled the overall sound is. All tests were done with no EQ and no ASP from my Pro iCAN. Gradomaiseen tyyliin Hemp vaikuttaa aluksi hieman ohuen ja hyökkäävän kuuloiselta – paremman termin puuttuessa kuvailisin Hemp:in keskiääniä “hönkäisevän” kuuloisiksi. Vaikka toistossa onkin aggressiivinen ote, se ei ole kuitenkaan häiritsevällä tavalla huutavaa, eikä liian ohutta ollakseen luonnottoman kuuloista. Totuinkin keskitaajuuksien tyyliin todella nopeasti, eikä siihen sen jälkeen kiinnittänyt huomiota muutoin kuin kuuntelun alkuvaiheessa. Muistaakseni RS2E on varsin tyypillinen Grado: kirkas ja ohut bassontoistoltaan. Ei niin kovin kauan sitten omistin myös RS1(vintage) ja SR325i mallit, eikä niissäkään ollut samaa musikaalisuutta kuin Hempissä. Äänikuva oli kaikissa muistaakseni Hemppiä isompi, osittain kirkaamman soinnin mutta myös erilaisten pehmusteiden vuoksi. Kun korva istuu kauempana elementistä, myös äänikuva yleensä kasvaa. Kiinteän kaapelin käyttäminen Gradon kuulokkeissa on minulle täydellinen mysteeri. Jos liittimet aiheuttavat ongelmia kooltaan pienten kuppien akustiikalle, ne on mahdollista sijoittaa myös kuppien ulkopuolelle. Grado doesn’t exactly make the comfiest fitting headphone in the world, but In my opinion, I don’t believe a lot of F-cushion headphones are. It’s the superb audio quality that’s going to make you listen for a long time. I have comically big ears and just don’t think this type of cup works for me, but if you have normal ears I don’t see this being a big issue. They’re relatively small and light, and they rest on your shoulders pretty well since the cups also turn and face down. I experienced some ear fatigue after a while of listening, but again I don’t see this happening for everybody. The headband is made from fine leather and sits atop your head pretty nicely. Maltillinen keskibasson määrä saa Hemp:in alabasson vaikuttamaan hieman ulottuvammalta kuin Gradoissa yleensä, mutta myönnän silti kaipaavani SR325i-mallin bassontoistoa, joka on muistikuvieni mukaan keskibassokorostumansa vuoksi hieman iskevämpää.

Patricia Barber is an incredibly talented Jazz player and performer. Jazz is littered with so much going on, that it can feel overwhelming. This song is no exception. Even amid Jazz’s movement, there is a structure in Barber’s song “Company” and it's fantastic. The Hemp ’s kept her vocal performance directly at the front of my head. The same can also be said for the individual trumpet and drum solos in the song. What I found most amusing, was that with a song with so much detail, I didn’t find myself distracted with the details like I would with an analytical and forward type of headphone. The build still wears that hand-made feel, too, which isn’t to say that it looks or feels cheap but that it doesn’t particularly look or feel machined. Hiemankin huonompi suoriutuminen alempien taajuuksien osalta alkaisi jo heikentää kuulokkeiden soinnin kokonaisuutta liiaksi. Keskiäänet: Hemp kiinnittää kuuntelijan huomion äänten voimaan ja rooliin musiikissa. Sundara sen sijaan “purkaa” musiikkia pienempiin osiin jättäen näiden palasten yhdistämisen musikaaliseksi kokonaisuudeksi pitkälti kuuntelijan vastuulle. Kumpikaan tyyli ei sinänsä ole toista parempi.
