You can leave them on your vehicle for as long as you like, until you feel confident enough to remove them. Where to place P plates on a car Once your L plates have arrived, it’s time to decide where to put them - learner drivers are required to have a minimum of 2 plates displayed on the car whilst behind the wheel. There is no specification of whether the plates should be placed on the left or right of the vehicle, however, plates should be visible at both the front and rear of the vehicle. Admiral is a trading name of EUI Limited. (Reg No: 02686904). EUI Limited is a subsidiary of Admiral Group plc If you have your own car then you’ll need your own insurance for that vehicle, but this could be an expensive option for new drivers

After passing the test, as a fully qualified driver, you can no longer display the L plates. Instead, you may opt to use the P plates. What are P plates? Dealing with learner drivers can be frustrating for some due to often being a little slow in terms of moving off and in general speed. These can be placed on windows. They are best avoided if possible, as they can obscure vision, but can provide an alternative for cars where the body is plastic, or the shape makes it difficult to use magnetic L plates.

There are no laws or rules on where to put L plates. The Highway Code allows for a degree of common sense in this matter by simply stating that they ‘must be placed in a conspicuous position on the front and rear of the vehicle’. The word ‘must’ indicates that this is obligatory and not advisory. Failure to do so may result in offence LC20 – Driving otherwise than in accordance with a licence; being similar to not displaying L plates at all. They should be visible from both the front and rear, meaning you will need to display at least two on your vehicle. Tie on - If you have an older car, you may still be able to attach the plates to the car’s bumper using string. However, most modern models have an integrated bumper so there’s nowhere to tie them! . I have looked at a few pictures of Mx5s and the compound curve does not seem too bad so you may get away with this.

What are L plates?

Martin Lewis: Do you have a Power of Attorney? It’s crucial protection – not just for the elderly – and more important than a will Made of durable moulded plastic, the system fits securely and easily over the glass of your passenger window (driver side). L plates often fall off when they become aged and whilst traveling at speed. There are generally 3 different types of L plates you can buy: Thanks Gary, you seem pretty clued up about it. (based on your username I take it you do/did some kind of sign writing? )
