I don't know if I should talk about putting because the feel is so subjective. I felt on putts the Staff was a bit more lively off the putterface than other balls... not quite to the extent of a Chrome Soft but just a little different. This early in the year my putting is too awful to really draw conclusions. Finished with a modern Staff Model stamp, the all-new premium ball joins the Staff Model family of products designed for elite golfers. Shop the new Staff Model ball here.

V-Cort Advanced Performance - A unique core composition amplifies energy to generate maximum velocity off the clubface, resulting in longer distances. It’s only with short iron approach shots where this ball’s shortcomings are noticeable, and even then it won’t be too obvious for most players. When you’re hitting an 8 or 9 iron into a green you would ideally want a little bit more feel and spin than you get from the DUO, but all things considered this is a great golf ball. The Wilson Staff Model is one of the best premium golf balls on the market and a ball that is being played on professional tours around the world. The Staff Model features a four-piece construction and soft urethane cover - a combination that delivers exceptional distance off the tee while providing players with maximum control and exceptional feel from 100 yards out. Between off-center cores, concentricity issues and inconsistencies with diameter, weight and compression, MyGolfSpy’s Ball Lab has given you plenty to worry about with your golf balls. With the release of the new Wilson Staff Model R, the company is giving you one more.

True Price is how we quantify the quality of a golf ball. It's a projection of what you'd have to spend to ensure you get 12 good balls. In theory all of this does make sense, but realistically the margin of difference between an imperfectly painted ball and a perfectly painted one is going to be negligible to the point of being impossible to even measure. Are you very much a classic white ball player, or someone open to playing something a little different as the golf ball world evolves? There's more choice than ever in this regard and if you are reading this guide, chances are you want a slightly different color or look to your golf ball. For those of you unfamiliar with the golf ball manufacturing process, understand that Wilson’s new approach is unusual, to say the least. While Wilson’s golf ball lineup is synonymous with its uber-soft DUO line, the company typically has at least one premium Tour offering.

Across both models, we found no significant issue with core centeredness. We did find some inconsistencies with layer concentricity. In total, six percent of the Staff Model samples were flagged as bad for unevenness in the layers (most often in the mantle layer), while 14 percent of the Staff Model R showed significant concentricity issues. Putter: Snake Eyes Viper Tour Sv1, 34" -or- Cleveland Huntington Beach #1, 34.5" -or- Golden Ram TW Custom, 34" -or- Rife Bimini, 34" -or- Maxfli TM-2, 35" During robotic testing and play tests with our Advisory Staff, unpainted Staff Model prototypes were evaluated next to our painted Staff Model balls. These ‘raw’ versions of the ball performed so well, delivered such exceptional precision and overall performance that our advisory staff demanded that we develop an unpainted version for production, and Staff Model R was born. The benefits of not going extreme with feel are twofold. For Wilson, it means no one is going to be turned off by the Staff Model. For the golfer, it puts the focus on playing the game, not thinking about the ball and how it might react. The Wilson Staff Model ball is very white. This seems to be the way with some brands. They are a kind of brilliant white as opposed to the repressed look I am used to. The model R has a duller look. The branding is also very sure of itself, the Staff brand is bold in its modern, capitalised type face. I quite enjoyed hitting it with driver too and I got a fair amount of distance from the DUO. My swing speed with the driver averages around 95/96mph so it’s a little higher than what would be optimum for this ball (swingers of 90mph or less will see the best results) but it performed well for me, an average golfer. The durability chapter of our Wilson Staff Model R story is interesting. To some degree, paint and clear coat exists to protect the ball but neither is essential to the design of a golf ball.
