About this deal

The most notable of these upgrades is its power unit - the C120D II is now powered by a single, all-in-one power box. Made of aircraft-grade aluminum but maintaining its lightweight build, a single power unit means less cabling and power components so filmmakers spend less time setting up their light, and more time being creative. It has a Junior Pin to mount to a combo stand. At 19.73 lbs/ 8.94 kg it’s a beast. No light-duty stands for this one. Today at Cine Gear 2021 Aputure announced their brightest light in the Light Storm series with the 1200d Pro.

Matthew has won 48 ACS Awards, including five prestigious Golden Tripods. In 2016 he won the Award for Best Cinematography at the 21st Asian Television Awards. Aputure ( / ˈ æ p ə tʃ ər/) is a global designer and manufacturer of cinema lighting fixtures, light-shaping accessories and lighting software. Its products are used in studio and on location film sets along with in photography and live production. The C120D II is over 25% brighter than the first-generation C120D, with an estimated brightness similar to a 1000W tungsten light, rendering it compatible with many of the strongest studio lights in the industry. DMX is the worldwide industry standard for film & television studios, theatre, broadcast, and all forms of digital networking systems. The 120d Mark II comes with DMX capability, allowing studio creatives to maximize their range of uses for their lighting arsenal.

I recently reviewed the MC series and the new 300D MK II and it seemed like an oversight to not spend more time with the 120D II. As a longtime user of the first generation 120D, I was particularly interested in the design updates in the second generation. Is it worth upgrading? Or, if you own the original 120D are you okay waiting? Let’s dive in. Separated light control design creates well-balanced center of gravity, eliminates use of weight bags As the Lantern has a 270-degree beam angle, it’s the preferable choice for creating soft, ambient lighting to illuminate an entire area instead of a single subject. This is useful for shots with numerous people, podcasts, open spaces, and because of the the light’s size, scenes that have small spaces. The summary, after working with this light for a couple of months is that it’s a great unit! Well built, plenty bright, easy to transport. I only have one minor negative point, and it’s that the controls have to be so big, but then the light itself is quite compact, so I guess all the controls and battery mount have to go somewhere! Like I said, minor.

The VL300 LED Video Light from Godox is a light source suitable for portrait, still life, and location photography. The daylight-balanced COB LED features a CRI rating of 96 and TLCI rating of 95, producing highly accurate color renditions and rendering extremely realistic flesh tones. The early team joined Xie and Sim with color scientists from Fujifilm and cinematographers from Los Angeles. Together, they engaged in product development of high-fidelity LEDs instead of low color renditioning diodes which were common at the time. The Aputure Light Storm COB 120D LED studio light is a fantastic addition to my regular portrait and food photography kit. This is a five-starreview of a well deserving product! Let there be light. The C120D II has taken the precision controls of the C120D and expands upon them even further, allowing for dimming seamlessly from 100% all the down to 1%, meaning the C120D II is capable of being both the brightest and dimmest light on your set.Like China balls, they are ideal for table scenes that require evenly spread light across multiple participants. Just think, if you were to light a dinner table scene between three members of the family with three separate lights and a softbox/light dome, you’d need three individual light setups. With the Lantern, it’s one — positioned overhead. The LS C120 II has a CRI of 96 and a color temperature of 5500K. Its TLCI has also been estimated to be as high as 97. A high grade indicates that illumination will portray colors well in a film or photographic environment. The LS C120d uses the popular Bowens-S photographic accessory mount which makes it easy to mount various lightning modifiers such as snoots and soft boxes. It comes included with a reflector dome that helps to both intensify and spread the lights beam source out over a larger area. My only small complaint with the reflector dome is that it does move around so if you were using the light outdoors in wind it is bound to wobble and create excessive noise. You could of course just use some gaffer tape to tape it down if need be. The optional fresnel attachment. As far as the colour rendering goes, above you can see the light recorded an average CRI (R1-R8) of 96.6 and an extended CRI (R1-R15) of 95.0. For accurately reproducing skin tones it recorded 97.6 for R9 (red), 98.6 for R13 (closest to caucasian skin tones), and 97.1 for R15 (closest to asian skin tones). These figures were very impressive and tell me that the light is very accurate in producing correct colours. Spectral distribution of the Aputure 120d on the left and a tungsten bulb on the right.
