Description

We love the unique game play of deducing a pair of cards from vague clues given by the Forensic Scientist. To start the game, the dastardly crime must first be committed. To do so, every player except the Forensic Scientist closes their eyes. Then, when everyone has DEFINITELY closed their eyes, the Murderer opens their eyes and points at one of each of their Clue and Means cards, making sure the Forensic Scientist can see them. Finally, give each player (except the Forensic Scientist) a badge token. This token indicates a player has not yet attempted to solve the crime and should be clearly displayed in front of the player. Return excess tokens to the box. The next stage of set up involves the role cards. The number of investigators can change depending on the number of players. Having played it so many times in such a short period of time, you might think we’d be burned out. But we’re not!

Other than that, Deception has made a permanent home in our game closet. What could these clues possibly mean? The next round then begins. However, this time the Forensic Scientist draws just one Scene tile and replaces one of the existing Scene tiles and its marker on a new piece of evidence. If one of the Investigators solves the case, all the Investigators, Witness, and Forensic Scientist win. At any point during the investigation phase, a player may attempt to solve the murder. This is done by cashing in your badge token and pointing out a player and a means of murder and an evidence clue. If these are the correct evidence the forensic scientist will say yes, and the game will be over. The new Event tile should be used in the same way as the original Event tiles. Use of the Event tile remains optional. This continues for three rounds. If the crime has not been solved by the end (see next section), the Murderer wins. Solving The Crime The Forensic Scientist then has everyone close their eyes. He’ll ask the Murderer to open his eyes and point to two cards in front of him (1 Means and 1 Clue). These cards indicate how the murder was committed and what was left behind. Deception: Murder in Hong Kong brings together all the best aspects of a social deduction game to create a fast-paced and fascinating whodunnit. The player receiving the Forensic Scientist card reveals; their identity and acts as the game master. They discard their Clue and Means cards and will play using the Scene tiles instead. All the other players keep their roles secret.

Find out who among you can cut through deception to find the truth and who is capable of getting away with murder! During the Allies Phase, the Inside Man causes 1 other player to lose their Badge token before making a guess (they can choose themselves)! The Inside Man wins if the Murderer team wins.

New Clue and Means Cards

Important: If you do not make an attempt to solve the crime before the last player's third and final Presentation, you will lose your chance to do so. Use it. Don't lose it! Return to the game box all Event tiles, which are used as a variant. Deal 4 Clue cards and 4 Means cards to each player. The players display their own 8 cards face up in front of themselves, with the texts and graphics facing the other players so they can all be seen. Players should take a moment to glance through all the Clue and Means cards on the table. Even though we’ve seen many of the cards multiple times, it’s always random in what they can be paired with. Add to that the fact that there are plenty of scene tiles to keep every game unique and intriguing. If either of the cards is incorrect, the Forensic Scientist will only say "No" without giving any additional information. Speaking of time, there’s a lot of non-game time in Deception. Most of that is spent looking over all of the cards before the game actually begins. For the murderer to select cards that’ll provide a good challenge, they need to try to hide among similar cards. To allow for that, some time needs to be set aside for everyone to just…look. The box says the game plays up to 12 people, and if that’s the case you’re looking at nearly 100 tiny cards with frustratingly small text. Even with half the number of people and cards there’s a not-insignificant amount of silent staring at the beginning of the game where only one person really cares about the information gained. Then there are three entire rounds of discussion and guesswork without a whole lot of information gained before final guesses are due.
