Description

The well-rounded response carried through to the midrange, which sounds evenly balanced and accurately represented. As is the case with most handheld vocal microphones, there are no switches or controls on the body of the SR314. This microphone provides uncoloured rejection of sounds off-axis and yields more gain before feedback than conventional vocal microphones. The stage was a Stageline SL100 with windowalls on three sides, which made for a very reflective environment.

With regards to plosives, it can be apparent on the Ps and Bs if you are up close but this is manageable if you pull back a few inches or move off the center line a bit. Or when you just want a set-and-forget mic, since it's more balanced than the Audix mics without EQ. unless of course you're doing something wrong - and i haven't come into the situation in which i couldn't get phantom power in more than 30 years! It delivers uncoloured rejection of off-axis sound, ensuring a high-quality sound at all times that highlights your voice and nothing else. This microphone was designed as a live vocals microphone, but works very well for live-streaming, podcasting, and voice over work. The mic performed beautifully capturing everything from the smaller intimate moments to the big rocking high energy moments of the set.

The sonic character embodies the amazing speed, clarity and definition that EW is so famous for; but there is something very special about this mic. I found that the SR314 provided the most natural-sounding response when a vocalist worked the microphone from around 8 to 10 inches away from the microphone grille. One glance at the SR314 won't be enough for most people, in fact, because this is a stunningly good-looking microphone. Even if you google, say, “441 Stevie Nicks,” you’ll see that she nearly always leaves it on the stand.it seems it's something in the midrange that makes it butter smooth on my vocals, and it seems that it have a lot more proximity effect.

But for close miking drums, it is better to go with Earthworks DM20 (or SR20LS, which is the same capsule) as they were designed for close miking drums and handles higher SPL (and will not output as hot a signal as SR314 or SR25 when close miking). The tight cardioid polar pattern provides consistent frequency response to 90º off-axis, with extreme attenuation of off-axis sound sources beyond 90º and maximum rejection at 180º. Engineers are unencumbered from the necessities of heavy corrective EQ, compression and de-essing, and constant vigilance against feedback. The stylized double-layered pop screen that surrounds the diaphragm almost seems like something from the 1970s.
